Garden Year #5

Anyone else just so grateful that it’s spring?

I’ve professed my love for spring on the blog before, but it means a lot more this year. In the midst of anxiety and worry and pandemic stress, there is new life springing up. The berries are starting to grow, the beginnings of the garden are planted and flower season has begun!

A beautiful yard doesn’t solve everything, but it sure is something to appreciate when you have extra time to spend in it.

What we’re growing this year

I’m going with my seedlings/already growing vegetable approach again this year, and I feel great about it!

We were able to stop by a local nursery (Tarheel Nursery) to grab a flat of various tomatoes and peppers to grow…12+ plants for only $14! And don’t worry, we kept our social distance while shopping.

This year, I’m growing:

  • Better boy tomatoes (a yearly staple)
  • Amelia tomatoes
  • Beefsteak tomatoes
  • Golden jubilee tomatoes
  • Marglobe tomatoes
  • Jalapeno peppers
  • Banana peppers
  • Black bell peppers

I planted a new rosemary plant in the herb garden, too.

In just a week, the plants are already growing (oh and my Mom gave me a cucmber, squash and zucchini plant, too). We had an almost-frost a few nights ago, but they seem to be still growing strong with a daily allotment of sun!

I plan on staking and fencing the outside of the vegetable raised garden bed again, too, to prevent the deer from munching.

What about flowers?

We also got a flat of fun, colorful and unique flowers from the same nursery.

Not to mention that our purple salvia is coming back in droves…and my hostas and lavender! Don’t you love perennial plants?!

For flowers, I planted (in pots and our raised “bee” box):

  • Yellow Inca and orange marigolds
  • Petunias
  • Zinnias
  • Snapdragons
  • White salvia
  • Portulacas
  • Celosia
  • Pansies
  • Black eyed susans

I’m so excited to see how everything does. And now we have an electric fence for our dog, so we’re outside a lot more.

We also planted some new bushes in a few landscaping areas and added new mulch.

I hope you are enjoying your yard space, whether it’s an acre, a square or an inside herb garden. Enjoy the new life that’s growing!
