Scandinavian Secrets: Good bread makes for a good life

Almost everyone loves bread in Scandinavia. And why wouldn’t they?! It’s some of the best bread (and pastries) in the world. We’re talking rye/brown bread, wheat bread, sourdough, multi-grain, and rolls in dozens of flavors (beer, oat, seeds, dried fruit and nuts). And while bakery bread is the best, the grocery stuff is surprisingly good, too.

A very popular breakfast, and one of my favorite Danish meals, is just bread, butter and cheese. It’s filling, comforting and simply delicious.

Bread is a canvas here, for topping with anything from Danish salted butter to curry herring, red onions and herbs. They take their bread so seriously that one of the most popular meals here is the open-faced sandwich (smørrebrød in Denmark). And it’s one of the most beautifully crafted and flavorful sandwiches I’ve ever had.

I’m so on board with the Scandinavian love of bread. It’s always there for you, when you need a snack, a meal or something to fill your tummy before you walk a few miles through the wind and rain or snow. And they understand that there’s just no time for crappy bread.

They deserve good bread and you do, too (#supportlocal)!

In summary: Quality bread is filling, body and soul.
