Today, I did something that I’ve wanted to do for years: successfully bake something with yeast. About 10 years ago, I tried pizza dough and it was a disaster (old yeast, I think).

Today, I also made something that I hope to make for many years to come: Danish boller. These little rolls/buns/pillows of yummy bread have been one of my favorite finds here. These were from a recipe for a simple birthday bun with a little cardamom. And I did it, and they turned out delicious!

They just needed simple ingredients and two rises and a little kneading (where I tried to use what I’ve seen of Great British Bake-Off). And it worked! We’ve been enjoying them with salted Danish butter and jam, too. And of course, I greeted my son after daycare with a fresh one.

Although my son will likely lose most of his Danish when we move back to the US, I think we can keep his and our love of bollers with simple bakes throughout the seasons. I’m also so grateful for all the simple pleasures I’ve embraced here and how cooking and baking have been so grounding during so much change.

Our week in Bordeaux was just as sweet as a bag of French pastries. So much fun, family and food that blew my mind with its simple yet profound flavors. ☀️

I just always feel at ease in the French culture and at their tables. And this trip was even more special because we visited some distant relatives of my husband.

Some 2023 thoughts:

This year, I learned so much about myself and my little family (thank you, @radicalwellness_co for my first go at therapy + our big move for teaching me so much). I feel like a much more confident and calmer person because of it.

This year, I grew closer to @jasoncflack in times where we’ve been each other’s only familiar person in a new place. It’s stretched us in so many ways, but the stretching has made us stronger.

This year, I’ve realized how precious my family and friendship relationships are to me. Also, Marco Polo-ing with my lifelong bffs, @alverson and @annamariegerber, has been a game-changer.

This year, I quit my beloved full-time job to embark on this new international adventure, and while I miss it, I’ve really leaned in to my free time/free space and some creative but challenging freelance, too. It’s also been rewarding to have some full-time mom moments and days.

This year, I’ve learned to move through seasons and treasure the good while getting through and learning from the bad. It’s a skill I’m really working on, as I’m learning that every life season is a little different.

I’m truly looking forward to all the things in 2024, and I hope you are, too.

This weekend we celebrate 2 years with our joyful, brave, globe-traveling little guy. He is such a gift, and we have so much fun together, whether riding bikes, picking fresh fruits, wrestling Pimmy or getting cozy under a blanket. We love you to the moon and back, James! Happy 2nd birthday!
