Scandinavian Secrets: Quiet is considerate

If you ask someone who has been to Denmark, then they’ll probably tell you that it’s a pretty peaceful and quiet place, even in the capital of Copenhagen. We live about 35 minutes by train out of the city center, and we just love the quiet of only a few cars every hour and lots of nature surrounding us.

There’s even a special “stillezone” or quiet car/zone on the front and back of each train here. It’s a place where you can sit without anyone talking or making any noise. And there are little stickers on the windows that say: Thank you for your consideration. It’s often the area that I’m drawn to when traveling by myself (toddlers are not allowed).

While I still get excited and talk loudly like an American at times, I treasure the quiet moments, stillness and peaceful walks I have here, sometimes with only the ringing bell of a passing bike as accompanying noise. The act of giving others peace and quiet is considerate.

In summary: There’s a comfort to be found in quietness.
