Scandinavian Secrets: Two duvets

You have to share so much in marriage: money, vacations, laundry, meals. And while most of it is nice, I’ve always found that sleeping arrangements seem more personal and individual. And the Scandinavians are right there with me.

It’s very typical here to have your own (I guess twin-sized?) duvet here, even when you’re sharing a bed. You have a duvet to fit you on your side and they have theirs. Oh and another important difference is that there’s no “top sheet.” So the order from the floor up goes: bed mattress, covered sheet, you, duvet. Also, many times, they’ll push two smaller beds together to create a bigger bed vs. having a king-sized bed.

Here are the wonderful benefits I’ve found to having your own duvet:

  • You can adjust your own temperature whenever you like. Hot? Stick a leg out. Cold? Bundle up like a caterpillar in your own cocoon.
  • There’s no fighting for sheets. You have your own duvet and can decide which way you want to maneuver it without disrupting your bed partner.
  • It’s much easier to put a clean duvet cover on a small duvet. No more crawling into a Cali King-sized duvet cover to connect the corners and never be able to find your way back.

In summary: While sharing things is important in a marriage, so is autonomy, something the Scandinavians clearly get when it comes to sleep.
