Unexpected (Un-foodie) Foods I Like

When you’re a foodie, or someone who is particular about food/likes good food/cares a lot about their food, people assume things.

Not that you don’t lead them to assume things, but there is generally a list of foods that foodies like and don’t like. Avocado: yes. Funyuns: no.

But we all have our secret snacks and late-night treats that we might be a bit nervous to share with the world.

As a food blogger, I want everyone to eat food that they like, whether it seems “weird” or not. When you’re keeping it balanced between healthy eats and treats, you can be OK with eating what you want. Balance is the key.

So, without further ado, here are some unexpected/un-foodie foods I like:

American cheese & nacho cheese

I know. I know. You may be questioning why you’re reading this blog if the writer likes fake cheese. Well, you know what, Velvetta Rotel dip is kind of a family tradition (once or twice a year). Also, American cheese melts like no other and has become our favorite burger topping. Fancy cheddar never melts well and gets oily, am I right?!

Oh and you know those weird plastic containers of round salty tortilla chips and highlighter-orange (preferably warmed) nacho cheese dip you get at a sports game or the movies?! I love them! I relish the crunch of the chips, the slight spice of the dip, and the fact that I only eat this every 5 years or so. #balance

Fake maple syrup

This one is for sure to upset some of you, but I think it’s another product that I like because I grew up on it. Although I regularly buy real maple syrup from Trader Joe’s to save face, I have to admit that I like the fake stuff. If I ever buy it, I’ll get the non-high fructose syrup one, but I dig that fake maple flavor.

Little Debbie snacks

Little Debbies are another snack that played an important part in my childhood. From oatmeal cream pies to cosmic brownies to nutty bars, these little plastic packets were a highlight of my lunch growing up. In fact, I used to make a killer brownie sundae by breaking the cosmic brownie into pieces, microwaving for 15 seconds and topping with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. You’re welcome for that tidbit.

I probably only buy 1 LD per year, but I still think they’re tasty.

Frozen pizza

I have a very special place in my heart for frozen pizza. This $1-6 grocery store treat was something I depended on (and looked forward to) many a Friday night in my teenage years and early 20s. Although I used to like a Totino’s pizza (anyone else out there a taco pizza fan?!), at some point I graduated to this Archer Farms goat cheese one or whatever grocery store brand pepperoni pizza. We tried this one recently and liked it, too.

Obviously, I prefer a fresh slice at one of my favorite local pizza joints, but sometimes a quick, cheap and crispy frozen pizza just hits the spot.

Christmas milk chocolate oranges

You probably have heard that milk chocolate isn’t acceptable for foodies. Dark chocolate is healthier, more bitter and foodie-approved. Well, although I’m typically a dark chocolate gal throughout the year, I can’t get enough of those Christmas milk chocolate oranges. I mean you even get to crack them on a table to break them apart. That sweet chocolate orange flavor is the best!

Fritos (esp. chili cheese flavored)

Here’s another overly-salted snack that I can’t get enough of (but don’t buy often to not encourage excessive sodium intake). Fritos may be super unhealthy and smell a bit like fish, but I love them. When we make chili, you gotta have it. And if I have the chance to pick an individual bag of chips (say, at a kid’s birthday party), Fritos are usually my pick, unless there are Harvest Cheddar Sun Chips. Doritos Nacho Cheese are also on the top of my junk chip list!

Whenever I was a kid and went to summer camp, my mom would treat us by buying those big bags of individual chip bags (amazing!), and I just waited for the day when I could pair my pb&j with chili cheese Fritos.
