Ingredient of the Month: Curry Powder

Today’s ingredient is an exciting one.

It will certainly add spice to your life and zest to your cooking.

I’m talking about the spice mix that makes vegetables come to life and creamy tomato sauces transform into Indian masterpieces.

Curry powder is a blend of spices, often Indian, but can also be used in Thai, Asian and African dishes. While every curry powder is different, they often consist of a mix of turmeric, chili powder, coriander, cumin, ginger and pepper. Different curries have different colors based on the spices within them.

Where can I buy curry powder:

You can get curry powder at most grocery stores or specialty food stores, in the spice section. Like I said earlier, there are many different kinds of curry powders, so you’ll have to see what they have.

Here are some common types of curry powder:

  • Madras- I like this as a basic yellow curry powder
  • Rogan Josh, Garam Masala, Korma- Indian curry blends
  • Hot curry powder- like a basic blend but spicier
  • And so many more!

How do I store curry powder:

Like any other spice, you should store your curry powder in a cool, dry place, like your pantry. Make sure not to let them expire either.

How do I cook with curry powder:

From vegetable to chicken curries to soups and roasted veggies, there are lots of ways to spice a dish up with curry powder.

One of our favorite ways is to use it in our spice blend on oven-roasted vegetables. Wash and cut your veggies, add a few tbs. of olive oil and salt, pepper, fresh garlic, curry powder, smoked paprika or any other spice you like, and mix it all together. Roast at 400 for 15-30 minutes, depending on the vegetable. Serve drizzled with honey or topped with yogurt.
